Ayra Starr’s mum and sister took to Lagos streets with banners promoting “Starr Girl,” even as the singer recovers from surgery ahead of its August 14 release.
Nene Aderibigbe, who a lot of people know online as Genzmummy, was recently spotted riding through Lagos with promotional posters for her daughter’s upcoming album, Starr Girl. And she didn’t come alone. Ayra’s sister joined her, along with a group of women all dressed in matching black outfits with purple gele, holding up banners that simply read “Stargirl album out on the 14th of August.”
Honestly, it’s the kind of thing that makes you smile. This isn’t a record label’s marketing team doing their job. This is family, out on the road, hyping their girl the old-fashioned way.
And there’s a reason it hits differently right now.
Just a couple of weeks ago, on July 30, Ayra Starr told her fans she was taking a short break after going through major surgery. She didn’t say exactly what the procedure was for, but she was honest that recovery was tougher than she expected. She asked her fans, the Mobstars, to be patient with her and to keep the Starr Girl buzz alive while she healed.
That’s probably why seeing her mum and sister out there with banners feels so personal. It’s not just promotion. It’s a family stepping in to carry the weight for her while she gets her strength back.
And she has been getting stronger. On August 7, just days after posting a photo of herself in a hospital bed, Ayra Starr showed up and performed at the Today show’s Citi Summer Concert Series in New York. She told the show she was healing and grateful to even have the strength to perform.
That’s a lot to go through while also gearing up to drop your third studio album.
For context, Ayra Starr isn’t new to big moments. She came up through Mavin Records back in 2021, dropped her debut album 19 & Dangerous, then really broke out with “Rush,” which landed her a Grammy nomination. Her second album, The Year I Turned 21, came out in May 2024.
Now, at 24, she’s about to add another chapter with Starr Girl, dropping August 14. And if the energy from her family’s street campaign is anything to go by, they’re not letting a health scare slow down the excitement.
Sometimes the loudest support doesn’t come from a PR team. It comes from your mum in a car with your face on it.
