Chef Amaka, wife of Aproko Doctor, shares her raw PCOS journey and how online mockery of her husband has affected her more than the diagnosis itself.

Three months into her marriage, Chef Amaka’s body sent her a signal she couldn’t ignore. Her cycle simply stopped. What followed was a diagnosis that would quietly shape her life for years: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS.

Now, she’s speaking about it publicly, and not just about the medical side. The part that hurts most, she says, isn’t the condition itself. It’s what strangers online have said about her husband.

Amaka, married to popular health content creator Aproko Doctor since 2020, said she first noticed changes in her body before she had a name for what was happening. Weight gain. A shifting frame. Then, her period vanished altogether.

A hospital visit gave her clarity. PCOS, doctors told her, a hormonal disorder that affects how the ovaries function and often disrupts ovulation entirely.

It’s more common than most people realize. Experts estimate PCOS affects a meaningful share of women of reproductive age worldwide, and in Nigeria specifically, awareness remains low enough that many women live with it undiagnosed for years.

For Amaka, the physical toll was only half the story. As her body changed, so did the way people treated her online, especially in photos beside her husband.

She’s been mocked for looking “bigger” than him. Called names that reduce her to a punchline. But nothing cut as deep as watching people question her husband’s ability to father a child, comments that assumed the couple’s fertility struggles were somehow his failure.

She said those specific comments brought her to tears more than anything else, because they landed on a wound she was already nursing quietly.

Aproko Doctor built his career simplifying health topics for everyday Nigerians. Now, his own wife is doing something similar, just from the inside of a diagnosis instead of behind a whiteboard.

Her openness has already resonated. Other women have come forward sharing similar experiences, a reminder that PCOS, despite how often it’s whispered about rather than discussed, touches far more households than the silence around it suggests.
