Filmhouse Group and The Special Foundation gave children from two schools their first cinema experience with a special Toy Story 5 screening in Lagos.

For a roomful of children at Circle Mall last Tuesday, something ordinary for most people happened for the very first time: the lights dimmed, a giant screen lit up, and a story began.

It wasn’t just another movie outing. For many of the pupils from Roydek Academy and Waslat Schools, it was their first time ever stepping inside a cinema. Filmhouse Group teamed up with The Special Foundation to make that moment happen, treating the children to a special screening of Toy Story 5.

The event carried a simple but meaningful message: every kid has a toy in their story. It wasn’t just a catchy line. It captured what the day was really about, giving children a shared experience built on imagination, connection and the kind of wonder that only a cinema can deliver.

This marked the first time Filmhouse Group and The Special Foundation had worked together, and organisers designed the day around more than just watching a film. There were refreshments, a curated programme, and plenty of moments built for laughter and excitement.

It’s easy to overlook how much a first cinema visit can mean to a child who has never had the chance before. For these pupils, watching Woody, Buzz and the rest of their toy box come alive on a massive screen wasn’t just entertainment. It was an introduction to a whole new world of storytelling, delivered in the most immersive way possible.
Toy Story 5, distributed locally by FilmOne Entertainment, gave the children a shared story to laugh, gasp and cheer through together, turning strangers from different schools into an audience bound by the same experience.

This screening wasn’t a one-off gesture. Filmhouse Group says it’s aiming to give 1,000 children access to the magic of cinema through a series of similar screenings and experiences. The idea is to use cinema as more than entertainment, turning it into a tool for connection, learning and memories that stick.
For a company known mostly for box office numbers and blockbuster releases, this initiative shows a different side of the business, one focused on opening doors rather than just selling tickets.

Not every childhood memory needs a grand occasion. Sometimes it’s as simple as a dark room, a big screen and a story about toys who never stop looking out for each other.
