Afrobeat star Davido just did it again. His sixth album, “ORIADÉ,” landed on July 31, and honestly, the timeline hasn’t been the same since.
Here’s the thing that’s got people buzzing: this is the shortest album Davido has ever put out. All five of his previous projects came with 17 songs each. This time? Just 13. For an artist who’s been consistent about that number for over a decade, that’s a real shift. And it kind of feels intentional, like he’s saying “new era, new rules.”
The features on this one are stacked too. You’ve got Mayorkun, Fola, Black Sherif, Llona, Leon Thomas, Aya Nakamura, NO11, JAZZWRLD, and GL_Ceejay all showing up across the tracklist. That’s a proper mix of Nigerian, South African, and international talent, which tells you Davido wasn’t trying to stay in one lane this time.
He’d actually been teasing this for weeks. Back in June, he announced the release date with a video where he rocked full Yoruba regalia, backed by a eulogy chanted in Yoruba. It matched the album title perfectly. His caption? “The kingdom expands. Chosen long before the throne.” Dramatic, but that’s Davido for you.
The rollout gave fans two singles before the full album dropped. “I Know Who I Be,” featuring JAZZWRLD and GL_Ceejay, looks back at his 15 years in the game, and the video actually takes him back to his childhood home. That’s the kind of full-circle moment that hits different when an artist’s been at it this long. Then there’s “Gimme Dat Ting” with NO11, which blends Afrobeats with Amapiano and leans hard into that confident, “I made it” energy Davido’s known for.
In an earlier chat with Notion, Davido said the album has something for everyone, different sounds for different moods, basically. Looking at the tracklist, that checks out. There’s a track called “Amazing Grace” with Black Sherif, one called “Julie,” a collab with Mayorkun and Fola on “B4 B4,” and Llona closes things out on “My Light.”
So why does any of this matter? Because Davido dropping a shorter, more curated project after fifteen years in the industry says something. Maybe it’s growth, maybe it’s just him trusting quality over quantity now. Either way, he’s not stopping at the album. A world tour is already in the works, and if his last one is anything to go by, expect surprises.
