Hilda Baci Proves You’re Never Too Big to Hustle for Your Own Business

Hilda Baci stepped outside her restaurant to personally invite passersby in with lunch discounts, and Nigerians can’t stop talking about it.

So Hilda Baci did something that has nothing to do with cooking marathons, and somehow it’s the thing everyone’s talking about today.

A video making the rounds online shows the chef stepping right outside her restaurant, apron and all, to catch people walking or driving by. Not sending staff. Not putting up a flyer. Her, in person, on the roadside.

In the clip, she walks up to passersby and says, “Hello. It’s lunchtime,” before nudging them to come in, sweetening the deal with a discount for anyone who stops to listen. It’s such a simple, almost old-school move, but it worked. You can see cars actually turning into the restaurant’s driveway while she’s still talking, and she’s right there ushering people in herself as the crowd builds.

Think about that for a second. This is someone who already broke a world record for cooking, someone with a big enough name that she probably doesn’t need to hustle like this anymore. And yet there she was, doing the most grassroots, hands-on version of marketing you can imagine.

That’s probably what’s hitting people the most. In a country where a lot of well-known business owners tend to stay behind the scenes once they’ve “made it,” seeing Hilda out there personally convincing strangers to walk in feels refreshing. It doesn’t feel like a stunt. It feels like someone who genuinely cares whether her restaurant does well that afternoon.

Reactions online have leaned heavily positive, with a lot of people applauding her for not being too big to sell her own business. There’s something about watching a known face do the “small small” work that makes people root for you even more.

It also lands at an interesting time, with so much conversation lately about how businesses actually win customers in a market that’s gotten really competitive. Ads and social media posts can only do so much. Sometimes it really is just someone standing outside saying, “come and eat,” that gets people through the door.

Whether this was a planned content moment or just Hilda being Hilda on a slow afternoon, one thing is clear. People love watching successful people stay grounded. And for now, that short video of a chef convincing strangers to have lunch has done more for her brand than any ad campaign probably could.
