Davido surprised former signee Mayorkun with a Tesla Cybertruck and a loving note, reviving talk about their unshaken bond years after DMW.

Some friendships survive record deals. Some don’t. Davido and Mayorkun’s clearly did, and on Sunday, the Afrobeats star proved it with a gift most people only dream about: a brand-new Tesla Cybertruck.

He didn’t make a big production of it either. Just an Instagram Story, a short caption, and a truck showing up at Mayorkun’s door the next day.

Davido’s caption read plainly: “My gift to you. I love you #iammayorkun.” No fanfare, no long tribute, just a direct line from one artist to another he clearly still considers family.

Mayorkun responded the way old friends do, with an inside joke rather than a thank-you speech: “Love 4L, OO1.” Anyone who’s followed their story knows exactly what that means, a nod to loyalty that’s lasted well beyond their years working together.

Their bond goes back to 2016, when Davido stumbled on a cover video Mayorkun had posted online. At the time, Mayorkun was still working a bank job, one he was already planning to quit. Davido called him the very same day he handed in his resignation letter. Not long after, Mayorkun released his debut single, “Eleko,” and a new chapter of his life began.

Over the next five years, the two built something special. Mayorkun dropped his debut album, The Mayor of Lagos, under Davido’s DMW label in 2018, becoming one of the imprint’s standout stars before eventually signing with Sony Music West Africa in 2021.

A Tesla Cybertruck isn’t cheap by any measure, prices in the US range roughly between $70,000 and $100,000, which translates to hundreds of millions of naira. But the price tag isn’t really the headline here. What stands out is the timing: years after Mayorkun left DMW, Davido is still showing up for him, publicly and generously

It fits a pattern fans have noticed for a while. Davido has built a reputation not just for chart-topping music, but for looking after the people who’ve been part of his journey, long after the ink on any contract has dried.

In an industry where artist-label relationships often end in silence or shade, this one stands out. It’s a reminder that some connections outlast contracts, and sometimes, the biggest flex isn’t the car itself, but who it’s from.
